Big first half propels Green Dot to victory

Writer: Chris LarsonChris Larson

Game Summary

The Green Dot Ballers put the disappointment of back to back losses behind them with a wire to wire win against Self Check, winning 65-49. The Ballers came out scorching, with Mike Reamy from outside and Will Harris dominating the paint. Reamy made his first four threes and Harris made his first seven field goals in the paint. Their efforts setup Kyle Welty as the closer, as he registered a game high 20 points. This game was pretty much over from the beginning, with GDB sprinting out to a 15-5 lead and turning back each run that Self Check made along the way.

Kyle Welty (22) finishes the fast break alley oop from Chris Larson on his way to a game high 20 points.

Headlines

En fuego from the start - Green Dot came out of the gates firing on all cylinders led by Will Harris and Mike Reamy combining for 23 points on 9-9 shooting from the field. The offense was moving the ball with zip, with 17 of their baskets coming by way of assists (Chris Larson team high seven). The flowing offense allowed the Ballers to shoot over 65% from the floor and 62% from three. Just a flat out great way to start the game.

Will Harris skies over 2 defenders on his way to another first half basket.

Grand Opening...Grand Closing - Mike Reamy was not happy with his uncharacteristically poor shooting last week and put that behind him with a 4-4 performance in the first half. The Ballers resident sharpshooter took the opening tip right into his first triple and then hit one just before the halftime buzzer to give the Ballers their biggest lead of the night.

Can we get some help here? Harris and Welty combined for all of the scoring in the second half over the first 17 minutes. The two main cylinders of the Baller offense were 7-11 and 18 points while the rest of the crew had zero points on 0-18 shooting. It is going to take more of a team effort for the Ballers to find their way to the summer league promised land, but we sure are fortunate to have two such great players!!!

Defense makes a summer appearance The Ballers have typically built their championship seasons on strong defense, but the pandemic induced break, seems to have the offense ahead of the defense. The Green Dot defense typically holds teams to the low 50s and below. Coming into this game the Ballers were getting torched for 65.3 points per game. Even after a strong showing this week lowered their average to 61.3, the Ballers are on pace to break the previous record for most points per game given up (Summer 2015 - 59 ppg). They will need better results on that end to get to where they want to go.

MVP

Kyle Welty - While the rest of the Ballers crew found their own niches, Welty served as the constant force keeping things going, leading the team with 20 points on the night. He was at his best in a choppy second half as the only guy who could get anything going on the offensive end. His 13 points (no one else with more than 5) kept Self Check at bay and allowed the Ballers to coast to the win.

Up Next

Joy Boys (2-2) 7:00pm - They knocked off previously undefeated Good Old Titans in another close game 58-53. That sets up a scramble to the end. Whoever wins the last two games out of Joy Boys, GDB and Titans will own the number 1 seed.
